Manika Batra receives Breakthrough Star award from International Table Tennis Federation

first_imgManika Batra won the ‘Breakthrough Table Tennis Star’ award at the prestigious International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Star Awards in Incheon, South Korea on Wednesday. Manika pretty much ruled the table tennis space in India this year with her stupendous performances at the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games.Manika said she was honoured to have received the award and deemed 2018 as the best year of her career so far.”I am really honoured and happy to have received the award. I feel, 2018 has been the best year of my career so far and I am happy for what I have achieved,” Manika said at the ceremony.”I would like to thank the Government, the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) and most importantly, my family, who has been there for me and motivated me along this journey,” she added.Indian superstar Manika Batra wins the 2018 Breakthrough Star award presented by Monday Club at the Incheon 2018 #ITTFStarAwards! #Congrats pic.twitter.com/sspTI5RK1qITTF World (@ittfworld) December 12, 2018Manika truly broke through on the scene at the Commonwealth Games in April this year. In Gold Coast, Manika guided India to their first-ever gold medal in the Women’s Team event and then went on to win a first gold in women’s singles category. She even bagged a silver with Mouma Das in women’s doubles and a bronze with Sathiyan Gnanasekaran in the mixed doubles category. The fact that Manika, world No.58 at that time, defeated world No.4 Tianwei Feng in the team event before beating world No.23 Yu Mengyu in the second singles was a sensational achievement for India and that led to a brilliant gold medal.advertisementHowever, Manika came back in the singles department to beat Feng once more in the semi-finals and thrashed Yu in the final to win the second gold medal, proving that her previous victories against them were not by fluke. At the Asian Games, Manika could not replicate her CWG form in the singles against much tougher opponents from China, Japan and Korea but along with Achanta Sharath Kamal, she bagged a mixed doubles bronze to make another first for the country in the sport.Thank you @ittfworld for acknowledging my efforts and giving me the Breakthrough Star Award 2018. Thanks to @sandeepgupta_tt @MorSubodh @ttfitweet @Media_SAI @IndiaSports @IndianOilcl, my family and all well-wishers for all the support. We are proud of Manika and all the others.”On the other hand, the man behind the success of Indian table tennis this year, Massimo Costantini was rewarded with the ‘2018 Table Tennis Star Coach award’ at the ceremony.#Congrats to Massimo Costantini for taking the 2018 Table Tennis Star Coach award presented by Butterfly at the Incheon 2018 #ITTFStarAwards! pic.twitter.com/ioIAc377q6ITTF World (@ittfworld) December 12, 2018This is Massimo’s second stint as India’s table tennis coach and his excellent work has shown on the players this year more than ever. Also Read | Have to match Asian players by 2020 Tokyo Olympics, says Manika BatraAlso Read | My life changed after Commonwealth Games: Manika Batra at Mind Rocks 2018Also Read | Manika Batra, glamour girl of Indian table tennis, becomes a Games legendAlso See:last_img read more
