Disagreement colors MTA board meeting

The MTA board meeting Thursday devolved into a long and unsuccessful debate over what color to name the new Exposition light-rail line Thursday, before the board postponed the decision for 30 days to allow more community input. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority staff wants to call it the Aqua Line – preferring no more than a two-syllable word and one that works in English and Spanish. But some have suggested cardinal, since the line goes by the University of Southern California, and Councilman Bernard Parks warned against red or blue for their gang connotations. Parks suggested silver or platinum, but those colors are already spoken for. He is expected to bring another proposal back next month. “We had no public input,” said Parks. “We’re just talking about imposing a color for no particular reason on diverse communities.” The board didn’t even venture into the double-color suggestion made last week – aqua on one half of the line, cardinal on the other. It also failed to delve into whether to call a portion of the Red Line, including its proposed extension to Santa Monica, the Purple Line. Board member Richard Katz joked that a feng shui consultant could help. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, chairman of the MTA board, clearly was losing patience over what he called “this humongous, earth-shattering issue.” Lisa Mascaro, (818) 713-3761 last_img read more
