Southampton 4-0 Arsenal: Saints trounce pitiful Gunners

first_img Southampton players celebrate 1 Same old Arsenal. Just when you think they can take the lead in the Premier League title race they throw it away with a dreadful display against a mid-table side.Southampton were more than deserving of their win as they were ruthless all over the park, and terrorised their toothless visitors, with Cuco Martina, Shane Long (2) and Jose Fonte grabbing their goals in a 4-0 victory.Arsene Wenger who, just days earlier, saw his side dismantle title rivals Manchester City, will be perplexed by his side’s performance but the truth is that they just did not show enough fight and were easily humbled. The opening was scrappy on the south coast with neither side crafting any clear-cut chances and sloppy passing spoiling the clash. An excellent Aaron Ramsey pass did light up the opening 15 minutes but Nacho Monreal could only hit a defender with his cross, with the resulting corner disappointing and another bobbling shot from the Spaniard being smothered, eventually, by Maarten Stekelenburg. The game though was lit up after 19 minutes with a stunning strike from Saints right-back Cuco Martina.Ryan Bertrand’s poor cross was headed clear by Per Mertesacker but from 30 yards Martina, slammed a sweet outside-of-the-boot right-foot shot curling into the back of the net, leaving Petr Cech with no chance.Shane Long caused the Gunners plenty of problems too as he happily gave Mertesacker a rough ride, and saw a goal disallowed as Southampton looked to double their lead.Theo Walcott had Arsenal’s best chances but couldn’t trouble Stekelenburg sufficiently, despite his side’s domination in the latter stages of the first half. After the break, Southampton had another goal disallowed, this time for offside, as Virgil van Dijk looped a header over Petr Cech, before crashing into the goalkeeper. The Gunners continued to be untidy and were punished just ten minutes into the second period as Sadio Mane squared for the dangerous Long, who tapped the ball past Cech, although Arsenal players were angered by what they deemed as a foul in the build-up.Lacking fight, the Gunners drove forward but skill alone could not beat a Southampton side who were ready to battle to protect their lead and it was soon 3-0 to the Saints as Jose Fonte powered home a header from a corner.Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Calum Chambers and youngster Alex Iwobi were put into the fray by a glum Wenger, but the damage had already been done. And, such was the ruthlessness of Koeman’s men, they were able to hit the post through Long before the Irishman managed to notch his second in stoppage time.last_img read more
