Detained Juba League leader killed in gunfight

first_imgProthom Alo IllustrationA local leader of Awami Juba League was killed in what the police called a gunfight between the law enforcement and the accomplices of the Juba League leader in Jhikargachha of Jashore in the early hours of Saturday.The deceased, Zahid Hasan Tokon, 30, is son of Ali Aslam of Krisnanagar village of Jhikargachha upazila. Zahid Hasan was one of joint conveners of Jhikargachha municipality Juba League, the youth wing of ruling Bangladesh Awami League (AL).The father of the deceased, however, alleged that the police picked his son up from his residence and shot him dead in cold blood. Police denied the allegation claiming that Zahid was killed in the shooting by “terrorists”.According to the police claim, Zahid was a listed top terror with as many as 27 cases on various charges ranging from killing to drug peddling, pending against him with the Jhikargachha police station.Police said they detained Zahid Hasan around 9:00pm on Friday from Jashore district town.Zahid succumbed to injuries he suffered when his accomplices opened fire on the police convoy around 3:00am early Saturday when they were conducting a drive along with Zahid to recover arms.Talking to Prothom Alo at Jashore General Hospital, Zahid’s father Ali Aslam said police picked his son from their house at Chanchra area of Jashore town around 9:00pm Friday.“After killing him in the shooting, police sent the body to the hospital morgue,” said Ali Aslam.Jhikargachha police station inspector (investigation) Fakir Azizur Rahman said Zahid’s father allegation is not true.He claimed Zahid was killed in gunfight with the law enforcement.last_img
